So what is Duck Falls exactly? The simple answer would have to be an accepting and comfortable spot that offers counseling and therapy for a variety of mental health needs, whether that is the onset of new symptoms or maintenance of chronic and co-existing (co-morbid) diagnoses over a lifetime. While our therapists have different ranges of experience and competencies among different populations (diagnosis, background, age, ect.), we will work to make sure adequate referrals are provided to those seeking care or specialized assistance that we may not be able to provide. Duck Falls offer individual and family therapy as well as occasional group therapy.
My grandfather used to say, “be like a duck, and let the water roll down your back.” When he said this, you knew with certainty he was not invalidating your worries, distress, anger, etc., but simply and lovingly showing you how he navigated through the chaos of this world.
So, what is Duck Falls? Duck Falls was created to resemble a meeting ground for everyone to be accepted, gather (group therapy), and receive individualized help in a setting that was both grounding and stimulating, or energetically pleasing for all. Which leads us to the falls part.
For the past 5-7 years, my mother would say, “when I imagine your private practice, I imagine waterfalls.” I had no intentions of including this in the name, whatsoever, maybe just have one in the office. Then when trying to convince me further when it became a reality, she said, “I just remember when we went to Niagara Falls, how much power came out of that thing!! Don’t waterfalls have this natural ability to energize and electrically charge things?!” Turns out, this specific energy is called hydroelectric energy, referring to the power of water in motion. So, while waterfalls are peaceful, they have incredible power and energy surging through. So it seems waterfalls are the best of both worlds, calming and energizing, especially in the world of therapy, healing, and functioning.
Therapy is such a broad term, as different things are therapeutic for different people, which can be different from day to day, moment to moment, and situation to situation. Sometimes we need the simple reminders (like be like a duck), sometimes we need an entire waterfall full of electrical energy to make it through what we are going through. Sometimes we need a sounding board and someone to listen, other times we need a plethora of coping skills or someone to help us find a solution. Some of us need both at the same time, and we all need a smoothie of things specific to us to get through the craziness and beauty of the world we live in.
